  Voice Over IP (VOIP)

Voice Over IP, commonly abbreviated VOIP, is a recent technology that allows high-quality transmission of voice over any IP (Internet Protocol) based data network, including the Internet.

VOIP comes in a range of products. At the free end of the cost spectrum are those that allow you use your computer, a microphone, and some free software to talk for free with others using the same setup. Two programs that allow this kind of VOIP communication are Skype, and Gizmo.

A more pricey VOIP option that is still less expensive than traditional phone lines is an internet-based phone line, such as those from Vonage. These products provide you with an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) that you connect to your high-speed internet connection, and then plug a regular phone into them. The phone gets its dial-tone from the ATA, which sends the voice call out across the internet to the city of the person you are calling, before it reconnects to the regular phone system.

At the top end of the VOIP product range are business phone systems, capable of connecting multiple lines to multiple telephones, like a traditional business PBX system. Unlike a traditional PBX, however, the phones can easily be moved from one location to another inside the office, and extension phones can even connect to the system from employees homes, or anywhere they have an internet connection.
